In 2016, after years of collaboration and planning, the Berkeley Water Center (BWC) at the University of California Berkeley, and the National Center for Rural Water Supply Technical Guidance at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), launched the “Berkeley/China-CDC Program for Water & Health” – a partnership to collaborate on applied research projects and initiatives related to water, health, and the environment in China, the USA, and elsewhere globally.

In 2019, this collaboration was restructured and expanded to include the Chinese Preventative Medicine Association’s (CPMA) “Rural Drinking Water & Environment Professional Committee”, the Chongqing Municipal Center for Disease Control & Prevention, and the Public Health Program at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech), as well as the BWC – under the newly named “Berkeley/China/Virginia Tech Program for Water & Health”.
